Acne is one of the most frustrating skin concerns, affecting not just teenagers but adults as well. If you’ve ever felt like you’ve tried everything—only to end up with red, irritated, or inflamed skin—you’re not alone.

Like many others, I spent years testing countless acne products, only to realize that most conventional treatments contain harsh chemicals that strip the skin, disrupt its natural barrier, and make breakouts even worse.

That’s why I’m launching a Skincare Series, and this week is all about acne—what causes it, how to heal it naturally, and the best clean skincare products to use.

The Root Causes of Acne

Most people think of acne as just a surface-level problem, but the truth is, breakouts are often a sign of something deeper going on inside your body. While clogged pores and excess oil production play a role, other factors like hormones, gut health, diet, and stress can also contribute to persistent acne.

  • Hormonal Imbalances: Fluctuations in estrogen, testosterone, and cortisol can lead to increased oil production and breakouts, especially around the jawline and chin.

  • Inflammation & Diet: Processed foods, dairy, and sugar can trigger inflammation, making acne worse.

  • Gut Health & Acne Connection: An unhealthy gut microbiome can contribute to skin issues, as toxins and imbalances in bacteria affect how the skin reacts.

  • Stress & Breakouts: Chronic stress leads to increased cortisol, which in turn ramps up oil production and weakens the skin’s ability to heal.

    Healing acne requires addressing both internal and external factors—which brings us to the next step: a clean skincare routine.


Building a Clean Skincare Routine for Acne

Many acne treatments are loaded with harsh chemicals like benzoyl peroxide and retinoids that strip the skin, leading to more irritation. Instead of fighting acne with drying products, switch to a gentle, non-toxic routine that supports the skin barrier while reducing breakouts.

Key Steps for a Clean Skincare Routine:

Double Cleanse – Remove makeup, sunscreen, and buildup with a non-toxic oil-based cleanser before following up with a gentle foaming or gel cleanser. (We went into more detial on this last week, check it out HERE)


Hydrate & Protect – Acne-prone skin still needs hydration. Look for hyaluronic acid, hydroxytyrosol, and castor oil to soothe inflammation and support healing.


Target Breakouts Gently – Instead of harsh treatments, opt for oxygen-based acne solutions like A02 Clear, which fights bacteria without irritating the skin.


Sun Protection – Using AHAs, BHAs, or any exfoliating products? Always apply SPF 30+ to prevent further damage.


Lifestyle Hacks for Clear Skin

Skincare is only one piece of the puzzle—your daily habits also play a huge role in preventing breakouts.

🌿 Support Gut Health – Eat probiotic-rich foods like fermented veggies, yogurt, and kombucha to keep your gut microbiome in balance.
🥗 Reduce Inflammatory Foods – Try eliminating dairy, processed foods, and refined sugar to see how your skin reacts.
💧 Stay Hydrated – Drinking enough water flushes out toxins and keeps skin healthy.
🧘‍♀️ Manage Stress – Chronic stress can worsen breakouts, so incorporate stress-reducing activities like meditation, movement, or journaling.
